Can you think beyond a corporate job: Biz of politics
GUESS who’s getting drawn to the power corridors of Delhi? None other than grads from top B-schools who are joining politics with an intention to take on strategic and leadership roles far away from corporate boardrooms. And there are many more waiting for the right opportunity to plunge into the business of politics.
Sample this. IIM-Lucknow alumnus Ranjan Kumar, who is now a full-time Congress worker, gives strategic inputs to party general secretary Rahul Gandhi’s team. Prodyut Bora, a 1999-batch IIM-Ahmedabad graduate, left his consultancy business to join the BJP as the national convenor for the IT cell. For Sidharth Nath Singh, an alumnus of FMS, Delhi, it’s the right mix of running a business and devoting time and energy for the BJP. No wonder, Mr Singh, who also has an assignment with UK’s design and engineering consultancy firm WSP, is the party in-charge for Nagaland, besides being appointed as BJP’s publicity in-charge for the upcoming Gujarat elections.
While there are several MBAs and entrepreneurs who have quit their jobs to join active politics, cherish some examples only from the top B-schools in the country.
Young Congress MP Sandeep Dikshit, himself an alumnus of Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA), has motivated a few other IRMA graduates to work fulltime on a project to assist over 50 MPs on policy and constituency development work. Many top B-school graduates are contemplating leaving their jobs in blue chip companies to join Indian politics. Joining politics is like enterpreneurship. You need to take risks. Money and comfort alone are not enough.
Significantly, several well-known young faces in Indian politics have Bschool degrees. Whereas Congress MP Sachin Pilot has a business degree from Wharton School of Business, his party colleague Milind Deora has an MBA from Boston University. Also, two other Congress MPs Jyotiraditya Scindia and Naveen Jindal are MBAs from top US B-schools.
According to BJP’s Bora more and more B-school graduates are realising that politics is a powerful tool to come closer to the people. The management principles can be applied everywhere — be it an NGO or a political party. So, management learning is always an asset. B-school learning is helpful even in politics.
“For me, the key is how to manage your time well. If you manage your time, you can do a lot in politics too,”
So what’s on the top of your mind. This is not the time to watch from the sidelines. This is the time to take the sides.
This is the time to stand, to have a say, to do.

Feeling hemmed in? Want to start up? A consultancy might be the right choice for you…
999 design consultancy was formed with a business plan two pages long and mortgaging owners’ personal property, by two experienced advertising professionals 25 years ago in Glasgow, and has expanded its operations to Manchester and London. Risking everything they had, the entrepreneurs set out on a remarkable journey, self-assured of success, with their excellence at designing promotional campaigns, packaging and sales aids.
Today, 999 boasts of an annual turnover of £3.4 million with just 44 employees. Operating in diverse sectors, 999 has catered to BT, BBC, Warburtons, Highland Spring, Freeview, Black Horse, Digital UK, Russell Europe and smaller but equally exciting clients, like Japanese fashion brand Onitsuka Tiger which created Uma Thurman’s yellow catsuit in Kill Bill; Macsween’s Haggis; Blackburn Rovers and Tula handbags.
The company when set up, had the best ideas in the business, which helped them establish strong brand equity and customer loyalty. This helped them later, in becoming first Reebok’s and then Orange’s main creative agency across the U.K.
999’s has achieved a DBA Award for design effectiveness in October 2007.
What started up as a small business with two partners breaking out to explore their own creativity, has grown to a full-fledged creative team consistently achieving high quality standards and expected to grow exponentially during the 2012 London Olympics and the 2014 Commonwealth games.
